Anne Z. Devol
July 26, 1924 ~ October 31, 2022
Anne Zoe Devol of Leonia, NJ, age 98, born July 26, 1924 passed away on October 31, 2022. Fondly called "Apple Annie" by her friends.
Wife to Russell (d. 1998) and mother to James Russell (d.2018) and Lorinda (Lori) Anne Cullen (Richie).
Most cherished grandmother of Elizabeth Anne and Christina Marie of Leonia, NJ.
She is predeceased by her parents James and Zoila Barnes, and her brothers James and Charles. Survived by her sister Viola of Leonia, NJ.
Anne was born in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, CA, to American citizens of Honduran and Canadian descent and spent her formative years in Cuba. She came to the United States in 1936 in 5th grade and quit school at the beginning of 12th grade, but never stopped learning and embracing knowledge.
She was proud to be the niece of the former president of Honduras, who served from 1949 to 1954, Juan Manuel Galvez. President Galvez provided more civil liberties and modernized the country in various meaningful ways after succeeding a dictator who had been in power for 16 years.
After marrying Russell in 1946 they lived in Manhattan, NY and in 1951 moved to Highbridge, Bronx, NY, where they lived in the same building as her parents, sister, brother, and his family, as was common back then. She had many lifelong friends in the building and their parties on New Year's Eve would literally shake the floors!
They moved to the suburbs in 1972, first in Leonia, NJ, then Teaneck, NJ, and then back to Leonia to be near family after her husband died in 1998.
Employed by Macy's from 1943 to 1953 and as a Macy's employee proudly marched in the Macy's Day parade. She then took time off to raise a family and then once living in NJ went to work for United Jersey Bank from 1976 to 1986, retired for a year, and went back to United Jersey from 1989 to 1996.
Anne was a homemaker, amateur artist, gardener, avid reader, nurturing grandmother, hard worker, and a loving, sincere, and thoughtful friend. She would clip out comic strips that she felt were relevant and I would find them on my refrigerator. She embraced her astrological sign, Leo, and was the recipient of many a lion statuette from her friends.
She enjoyed going to Cape Cod with Russell and in later years to Lavallette, NJ with her daughter's family. She loved apple picking, going to Amish country, random car rides to see the scenery and was never without a box of Vanilla Wafers to munch on during those rides.
She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that a donation to the Alzheimer's Association be considered.
All are asked to Assemble Saturday for the celebration of her funeral mass in St. John's R.C. Church at 11:00 AM.

Prayers and thoughts are with you.
I will always remember Anne’s kindness and love of her family. I can see her in my mind’s eye looking for Lorie from her 5th floor window. I think of her with a smile on my face.
