  1. Don always had a smile and kind words when we met in the hallway before our classes. He will be greatly missed.

  2. Donald Hsu was a caring, compassionate colleague who will be missed. He always asked how I was doing with care and interest.

  3. For the past 8 or so years, at Dominican University graduation, as we would line up for the faculty processional, Don and I inevitably would be standing next to each other. It became somewhat of an unspoken ritual as a time for us to talk, since our paths would rarely cross on campus. The time would be spent with Don talking and with me listening, about his view on the institution of education. I will miss these interactions. God bless him, his family, and all those fortunate enough to know him.

  4. ~ was one of the best teacher that ever came into my life. Not just a great teacher but a great guy! I will always cherish our after class talks and will always have you in mind. you’re missed already , till we meet again.

  5. Educator by design…

Every morning, I knew if no one spoke to me Dr. Hsu would. His first comment would be Good morning Denise with a short chuckle, followed by asking me was I ok? I always thought hmmm does he really care or just asking. But this was his response every single morning, so it wasn’t a habit it was genuine. Thanks for always doing your best. May you rest well.

    Much respect..

  6. Don was an inspiration to all who crossed his path. His wealth of knowledge was admired by all. I will miss the cordial interactions we had whenever we met; not to mention the smiles and laughter. Rest in peace dear friend.

  7. Prof. Donald Hsu was a valued Pace University computer science adjunct professor over the past decade, and he taught Computer Organizations, Artificial Intelligence, and Research Methods. He has always been passionate in sharing his social and technical insights with his students. He will be deeply missed and remembered by his colleagues and students at Pace University.

  8. Don was an institution in our Division of Business, Innovation, and Leadership. Not only did he teach at Dominican for decades, he had been the division’s director for many years. When I arrived as the new guy on the block six years ago, Don would often share his thoughts with me on how we could improve – particularly in supporting our students. He was most focused on his students – he went to enormous lengths to ensure that his students didn’t slip through the cracks. I always knew he was a safe set of hands for any student who was struggling – he would not give up on them. I’ve met alumni who had graduated decades ago who remembered him for his attention to their well-being and were thankful to this day. Rest in Peace Dr. Hsu.

  9. I am saddened that a man of such drive and caring for his students is gone. We had made plans to work together for June next year. I will miss him as will his students and family.

  10. They say at the beginning of freshman year your advisor and professor will always be there until the end, I say that is exactly true.

Dr. Hsu, My heart is truly broken and shattered when I received the email that morning about your passing. I will remember the second semester of freshman year when I found out you will be my advisor and professor for the next four years studying international management. I will cherish all the memories and opportunities you have bestowed upon me from being in your class bright and early in the mornings with your energetic humor and lucky fist bumps, your stories of traveling over 90+ countries, being goofy with the DUNY basketball team because of how big of a fan you were and imitating Kobe’s jump shot, you always made the women in class either lab or project managers because you believed women run the world, to checking up on me and students during the week with your weekly emails, from assisting and making sure we weren’t stressed with signing up for class, and giving us your wisdom of how great of a educator and mentor you are. Serving 35+ years at Dominican is an extraordinary milestone and legacy you left us. This is not a goodbye, but this is see you later until we meet again. I know you will be watching up from above and visiting the countries you loved. Glad to call you my mentor, professor, and friend. 🤍🕊️

    Thank you always,
    Kristina Western

  11. Dr Hsu was an exceptional person. Always greeted you with a smile when you saw him on campus and would engage you in casual conversations. He was great with his students and an outstanding faculty member. This is a huge loss for everyone who knew him. He will be sorely missed. Rest in peace.

  12. Dear Donald,
May you rest in peace! I wish I had known you better and had the opportunity to listen to your stories gathered from all those places you had visited, and your opinions on subjects you had had the expertise.

    • Dr. Hsu was a great professor but an even better person! I had the pleasure of taking several of Dr. Hsu classes when I attended Dominican. I’ll never forget Dr. Hsu famous words of “shake my hand” after a correct answer or “I respect your culture” after a comment was made on a topic or candidly conversation. Until we meet again Dr. Hsu, rest in peace!

  13. Gibran wrote the following in The Prophet, “and ever has it been that love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation.”
Having worked alongside Donald for 29 years at Dominican, I will certainly miss him.

  14. Dear Dr.Donald,May you find peace in heaven and we will forever treasure your smile in our memories.

  15. ~More than a professor, Donald was the person to bring light while having a dark moment. I will cherish all the memories and moment I had with you! Heaven has truly gained an angel and I’m certain you will be looking over all of us. Thank you for everything you did for all of us. Until we meet again!

    -Armando Morales

  18. Condolences to all the Hsu family. As a colleague, Don was always friendly and warm. He was a staple at Dominican. He will be missed.

  19. When I started teaching at DUNY 15 years ago, Don helped me understand the students and how to communicate with them. When I became the program coordinator, Don helped me understand how to do that job. He was a good friend and colleague. I will miss him for a log time. He was in the IT office just the day before. He did not look sick and was his normal self. I am glad he did not suffer. He lived a good life.

  20. Greetings – my heartfelt condolences to the family. As the Associate Dean at the College of Doctoral Studies at the University of Phoenix I was Donald’s supervisor. He instructed classes on an ad hoc basis and I got to know him well over the last few years. He was a dedicated instructor with a wealth of knowledge and experience, especially within the IT disciplines.

On behalf of the University of Phoenix our sincere condolences to the family and friends.

Your kind words, gave me a confidence that I’ve carried with me throughout my professional career. Thank you for the countless laughs and knowledge shared. My condolences to the family, may God comfort you during this time.

  26. Dr. Hsu was a good professor, an encouraging mentor, and a dear friend. I am saddened by his passing, as I am sure is everyone who had the chance to know him in various contexts. My heart goes out to Dr. Hsu’s family at this time of loss

  27. Don and I shared both a birthday and location with the two of us in the West Wing at Casey–so, I interacted with him often as he and I connected between classes. A smile on his face, a kind word out of his mouth and a fist bump were his trademarks as was his relentless pursuit of his students’ well-being. I am fortunate to have known him for the 37 years he has been at Dominican, and he would always joke that we would be retiring together, but not for a few more years. Don, my colleague, I miss you already, and my heart goes out to the Hsu family as they face this difficult time. May you draw consolation from the fact that you are in our thoughts/prayers as we grieve his loss together.

  28. Dr. Hsu was a great man and had such an impact on my time at Dominican college. I was a business major and he taught me so much about the business world. I was lucky enough to stay in touch with Dr. Hsu through LinkedIn, he would always check on how I was doing. I will never forget whenever I would answer a question correctly while participating he would always come over and say “shake my hand”. It was great! He will be missed, and I will rememeber him forever

  54. Whenever Don was in the office he would always smile and share knowledge with me about trends in technology or his students. Our conversation last Wednesday focused on student advisement….he was highly concerned about meeting my student. As usual, I planned to take action on his request. 56. Dr. Donald Hsu – a tribute
    by Dr. Frank Owarish
I have known Dr. Hsu since I joined Keller Graduate School of Management in 2005. D. Michael Hamlet was the Dean. We were both faculty members teaching different subjects. We often got together for lunch and compared notes and thereby helped improved each other’s teaching. Dr. Hsu also taught at several other colleges in the area. Dr. Hsu informed me about the Chinese American Scholar Association (CASA) an academic organization. CASA organized academic conferences in the east side of the world as well as the west side. I became a member thereof and the usual procedure when there is a call for papers is to submit an abstract for consideration and proceeded from there. Our partnership has gone on since then. As a friend we met in Chinatown once a mouth and had lunch at the Great Noodletown. He introduced me to his barbers for good values. We bought Chinese pastries then vegetables and fruits. While he came to Chinatown from his residence in Fort Lee by car, I took the subway and proceeded to the restaurant where we usually met. When we had finished shopping, I would accompany him to the place where his car was parked and he would give me a ride uptown to where I live. He would then take the drive back to his home in Fort Lee. Dr Hsu would travel to the east side of the world in January to conduct CASA e-Leader Conference and would do similar conference in the west in June. The next CASA e-Leader Conferences were to be in Manila and Munich. And now, Dr. Hsu is gone and we are not able to benefit from his expertise and wisdom. May he rest in peace.

  57. I met Don through the Fort Lee morning coffee meet; he was a busy guy but always accompanied Salome to join each Sunday. He would come in with his famous fist bump to everyone and his contagious smile, which I will miss dearly. I will also miss his “Gotcha’ when he came home from work and found us played Mahjong. He was Salome’s best friend and ‘little Honey’. Don, you have accomplished a good journey and can now rest in peace. I will forever miss you.

  58. Professor Don Hsu was a highly respected and admirable individual. I knew him through IEEE activities, where he was an excellent motivator for students and always went the extra mile to assist both students and young professionals. I am truly shocked that he recently congratulated me on LinkedIn, and now he is no longer with us. His passing is deeply saddening; may his soul rest in peace. The IEEE North Jersey Section has lost a great volunteer and a noble person. I pray that God gives strength to his family to endure this significant loss.
