March 25, 1933 ~ August 18, 2024
Born in:
Mashad, Iran
Resided in:
West New York, New Jersey
Our dear beloved mother, Hasmik Simonian, passed away peacefully in Ocean City at the age of 90.
Hasmik Simonian was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Simonian.
She is survived by her two sons Armen and Gregory, their spouses Sally and Carla, and her four grandchildren whom she absolutely adored: Alexandra, Garrett, Sophia and Olivia.
Hasmik Simonian was born in Mashad Iran on July 29 of 1934. Her father was Abkar Bachdasarian (later changed to Gasparian) and her mother was Vartohe. Unfortunately within one year of giving birth to Hasmik, Vartohe died from Tuberculosis. Abkar eventually remarried to Aroosiak and that was who raised Hasmik.
Hasmik was an outstanding student through high school and decided to become a doctor. She was accepted to medical school in Mashad Iran, and she became one of only two women in her class to graduate and get her degree. She came to the United States in 1960 as an exchange visitor and did her internship at Bayonne Hospital during which time she met her future husband Thomas Simonian. She did her Pediatric residency in Miami Florida followed by a fellowship in Pediatric Oncology at Sloan Kettering. During this time she started to moonlight in the Bayonne Hospital ER where she found her passion and decided to pursue a career in Emergency Medicine – a specialty that did not even exist at the time as she was a pioneer in this field. It was not until 1976 that the first board exam for Emergency Medicine was founded and Hasmik passed with flying colors.
It was during this early time in her medical career that she gave birth to Armen in 1963 and Gregory in 1966. She was extremely proud that both her sons followed in her footsteps to become outstanding physicians in their respective fields of Gastroenterology and Vascular Surgery.
Hasmik and the family spent their summers in Ocean City, NJ. During summer vacations, she would often call Shore Memorial Hospital to let them know she was in town and available to do shifts in the ER.
She eventually settled down in Ocean City and formed a tight community of friends that she would enjoy spending time with.
She was an active member of various Armenian Societies and was recently honored by the Armenian Relief Society.
She was an amazing story teller who would often recount Armenian history in vivid detail.
She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, an outstanding mother in law, and an amazing grandmother.
She will always be remembered for her style, flair for the dramatic, her passion for life, and of course her amazing wardrobe and complementary jewelry!
We will miss her dearly but her memory will live on in the hearts of all those who knew and loved her.

Charities
The family greatly appreciates donations made to these charities in Hasmik Simonian 's name.
I first starting working with Dr Simonian in Ocean City. She joined our team working the urgent care in the summers for AtlantiCare and then we both moved on to many other locations. It was a pleasure getting to know her. She boasted about her children and grandchildren. You could tell she was very proud of them. She would cross my mind quite often.
I remember her flair and style. She was a captivating story teller and held my attention. She was gregarious and knew how to make everyone feel welcome. Her sense of energy was palpable wherever she went and lit up the environment around her. I am grateful for the family reunions that she organized. Her legacy will live on in her personal and professional accomplishment; she was a pioneer.
The most vibrant woman and a trailblazer to be reckoned with!
My Aunt Hasmik was an extraordinary woman who left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She was a dear friend to both of my parents, Asghar annd Jeanne Chuback. We have countless memories of good times shared across six decades. We laughed and laughed and laughed. She was a talented entertainer and raconteur! She was a beautiful and brilliant woman. Most importantly perhaps, she was an incredibly hard worker. She was a great provider, and an inspiration to so many. She was a trailblazer as a female physician trained under the Shah in Iran in the 1950s. Dr. Simonian leaves a legacy that shines as a beacon of light to all people who have passion, desire, dedication, determination and a tireless work ethic in their heart. Aunt Hassie, you will be sorely missed but never forgotten. It gives me great solace to know you’re in heaven now with my father, your parents, your husband, and all the rest who left the physical realm in previous years. May the wise Lord bless you and keep you. Rest in peace. God knows you earned the rest.
I had the pleasure working with Dr. Simonian and URgentcare. As soon as she walked in, she made an entrance with her high heels, lipstick and flare for fashion. She was absolutely brilliant as a physician. There wasn’t any question that you asked her that she didn’t have an answer for.
We became fast friends and I started to capture our Friendship with pictures. We attempted numerous times to do selfies. I don’t know if we did a very good job, but I have some amazing photos of us together.
We had a lovely going away party for her, and she was definitely the center of attention. People were drawn to her for her laughter, her quick smile, her quick wit, and her genuine care for all of us. No detail was too small for her to remember.
She was kind to all that she met And had a true understanding of hardship.
I used to sit in her ocean City apartment and just listen to her stories. They were never boring. Her attention detail was amazing.
She would always give me education to learn, CDs for my car so I could listen to emergency medicine updates.
She was fascinating to all of us and her influence on my life, and my career is unmeasurable.
Mostly, she was my friend. I called her on my way home and we would talk for hours on the phone. She always talked about her family. She was so proud of all of them. She never forgot a detail about any of their lives.
It was my honor and privilege to know her and call her not only one of my favorite doctors, but one of my dearest friends.
