Bernard Wayman

Wayman, Bernard of Fort Lee on February 21, 2015. Born in Hebburn, England on October 24, 1920, he served for six years during WW II in the Royal Engineers of the British Army, for several of those years building the Burma Road and repairing the airfield where the Flying Tigers were based. After the War he emigrated to the U.S., became a citizen, and joined The International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 825. He was an operating engineer and then lead engineer for 35 years on various construction projects in New Jersey and New York, including Newark Airport, the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway, the Tappan Zee Bridge, and Butler Dam. He was a devoted family man, a good friend to many, and a lifelong lover of animals who counted among his pets horses, dogs, rabbits, pigeons, and canaries. The beloved husband of the late Adeline Wayman (neé Cavally) and brother of the late Edna Cooney and Martha Ward, he is survived by his sister Patience McDermott, his children Ellen Wayman-Gordon and Nicholas Gordon, Laurie (Wayman) Lyons and James Lyons, and William Wayman, his grandchildren Christopher Lyons and Aoife McDaid, Jessica Lyons, and Tiffany and William Wayman, and nephews and nieces Lawrence and the late Theresa Cavally, Martin and Claudette Cavally, Edward and Christina Conta, Richard and Maureen Conta, Patrick and Jan Cooney, Carol and Ross Freeman, Vivien and Peter Lutz, Bernard and Jacqueline Owston, Keith and May Owston, 18 great-nieces and nephews, and 3 great-great nieces and nephews.. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 25 from 3-5pm and 7-9pm at the Frank A. Patti and Kenneth Mikatarian Funeral Home, 327 Main Street in Fort Lee. The funeral will leave 10:30am Thursday, February 26, for the celebration of his funeral mass in the Historic Madonna R.C. Church, 2070 Hoefley’s Lane Fort Lee at 11:00am.
