In Loving Memory of Iris Neraida Rivera
June 15, 1957 – December 17, 2024
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Iris Neraida Rivera, a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She passed away on December 17, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of unconditional love, resilience, and an unwavering dedication to her family.
Born on June 15th in Cataño, Puerto Rico, Iris was the beloved daughter of Esther Dávila and Juan Lamar Sr. In the 1960s, her family moved to New York, where Iris was raised with her two older siblings, Idelfonso and Carmen, and her two younger siblings, Juan and Sonia. From an early age, Iris was the embodiment of devotion and resilience, nurturing a profound connection to her family that remained the cornerstone of her life.
In 1977, Iris became a mother to her son, Anthony, and later, in 1980, to her daughter, Leilah. Determined to provide a better future for her children, Iris earned her GED and pursued her passion for working with children, taking classes at Bronx Community College with the dream of becoming a preschool teacher. During this time, she began working at a daycare center off Jerome Avenue, where her love for children shone brightly.
While working at the daycare, Iris met Michael Basile, with whom she would share over 40 years of her life. Together, they became business partners, founding American Payphone Communications, where Iris excelled as an Executive Administrator. Her professionalism and warmth left a lasting impression on employees and clients alike. After retiring, Iris embraced her time by traveling and cherishing moments with her family.
Iris was known for her vibrant personality, quick wit, and a sense of humor that could lighten any room. She believed in treating everyone with kindness and often struck up conversations with strangers, making connections wherever she went. Her laughter, zest for life, and occasional mischievous remarks made her unforgettable.
Iris is survived by her children, Anthony Chiles and Leilah (David) Tyree; her grandchildren, Anthony Chiles Jr. (AJ), Justin Romero, Teyon Tyree, Josiah Tyree, Prince Chiles, Sophia Tyree, Hannah Tyree, Solomon Tyree, Skyla Chiles, Samuel Tyree, Alina Tyree, and Autumn Chiles; her siblings, Idelfonso Martinez, Juan Lamar, and Sonia Lamar; and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, and sister, Carmen.
Iris’s family invites all who knew her to celebrate her incredible life and the joy she brought to those around her. Though she is no longer with us, her memory lives on in the hearts of those she touched. May she be remembered for her strength, her compassion, and the love she gave so freely to her family and friends.
